The First Regional Conference of NELTA

The first Regional (Provincial) Conference of NELTA-2017 was held with the theme ‘Teaching Practices and Learners in the Modern Classrooms’ in K.K. International School, Dharan, Sunsari on November 3-4, 2017

The provincial conference is a new practice following the new political structure of Federal System of Nepalese Government. Nepal English Language Teachers’ Association (NELTA) Sunsari branch was able to accomplish their dream to conduct the first regional conference of NELTA successfully.

During the Inaugural Ceremony, NELTA President Ms. Motikala Subba Dewan expressed her pride to witness the auspicious moment in the history of NELTA, and the excellent performance of NELTA Sunsari Branch as per the demand of the nation which shows NELTA's adaptability, preparedness, and pro-activeness. She congratulated Sunsari Branch for being a stepping-stone and a model to other branches for the historic phase. The Regional Education Director Dr. Bhoj Raj Sharma Kafle highlighted the importance of English education in the modern era. In the same way, Mr. Sumit Thapa delivered his remark on the behalf of PABSON, Sunsari, and Mr. Khagendra Subedi (DEO, Sunsari) on behalf of District Education Office.

The Two Day Conference was addressed by the Key Speakers Prof. Dr. Abhi Subedi on the topic 'Teaching Practices and Learners' Engagement in the Modern ELT Classrooms', Prof. Dr. Jai Raj Awasthi on 'Engaging Students in Language Learning: in and outside the Class', Dr. Dennis Yang Tao (RELO, U.S. Embassy, Kathmandu) on Research/Publications in American Academia, and Prof. Dr. Vishnu Singh Rai on 'Postmodernism & ELT'.

Similarly, three plenary speakers delivered their plenary speeches: Dr. Laxman Gnawali on 'Know your learners before you teach', Mr. Hemanta Raj Dahal on Teaching Listening and Speaking: Implications on Fluency Development in EFL' and Ms. Rhona Brown (British Council) on 'Learner-Centered Teaching: What Lies behind the Label? The Special Speakers were Ms. Deborah Silver (English Language Fellow, Far Western University), Mr. Matthew Nelson( English Language Fellow, Prithvi Narayan Campus, Pokhara), and Mr. Bishwa Raj Gautam( RELO, Program Specialist, U.S. Embassy). More than five hundred participants witnessed the conference with zeal and enthusiasm, the first Conference on ELT in the Eastern Region of Nepal.

The Conference started with the formal opening session followed by concurrent sessions, plenary sessions, and panel discussions, then finally concluding with the AGM of Sunsari branch with the formation of new executive committee unanimously. The panel discussion led by Dr. Laxman Gnawali on the topic 'Challenges of English as a Medium of Instruction in Community Schools' added more energy to participants.

Thirty-six Concurrent Sessions covered different topics related to ELT, challenges, and opportunities of teachers of Nepal.  23 First-time presenters/attendees were supported by the Regional English Language Office, U.S. Embassy, Nepal. RELO Program Specialist Mr. Bishwa Raj Gautam distributed the AE teacher certificate and had a meeting with RELO sponsored participants in the conference. The success of the program lied on local support from four municipalities, four colleges, eight private schools and District Education Office by sending teachers from community schools as well as the unconditional support of US Embassy and British Council. The conference ended with the vote of thanks by Mr. Rabin Baral, former joint secretary of Sunsari NELTA.
